How idiotic is it that Taiwan has to compete in international sporting events as "Chinese Taipei"?

Obviously, designating Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei" is to appease China. But exactly what would the PRC bullies do if international sports organizations were to suddenly designate Taiwanese athletes and teams as representing "Taiwan" instead of "Chinese Taipei"? Throw a temper tantrum, start a war, withdraw from competition (good riddance!), physically assault Taiwanese athletes….what…?

Its complete idiocy. There is no reason why Taiwan shouldn’t be allowed to compete as Taiwan or as the ROC in any international event. If countries and people weren’t so afraid of China they wouldn’t be able to do half the things that they are doing now.

What would China do if the Olympics, or other events started calling Taiwan, TAIWAN? Probably whine like a little baby, throw a tantrum, and withdraw from the event, and do some sort of political/diplomatic protest. Only to realize no one cares, and so the CCP masters would turn to their hatred back inwards and spread vile lies about the other countries who recognized Taiwan, claimed that the event committee was Anti-Chinese, that they were attempting to disrupt the harmony of China, and blah blah blah what ever crap they could come up with. Ending with a complete media blackout of the event and news pertaining to it. Would they go to war, most likely not. The current government of China is like a dog that goes around peeing on everything claim it as their own and then barking like it has rabies when someone says anything different. The only thing that happens in the end is the other county does what it wants, and China got to bark a lot.

As for the BSherman clone account, Gorge Washington’s (or more likely his Average American clone that was banned recently) answer. Taiwan is not a child separated from its motherland, considering Taiwan was NEVER IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE PRC, a Providence, a Territory, an out post, a fishing village, a whatever that would allow justifiable claim to the lands that are make up Taiwan. Beyond that the Republic of China government that is the legal government of Taiwan, has been in existence for FAR longer than the PRC has even been a wet dream of Mao. Therefore his first statement is already proven by historical facts to be complete lies. His second statement with even a glancing view of the link provided proves that it is also complete crap. There is NO mention of REUNIFYING anything, because the CCP governing body of the PRC is not willing to submit the rule of the Republic of China. Therefore there can be no ReUnification. The document signed was the first step, (in many people’s opinion to be a major sell out move), in a free trade agreement with China. It is not a unifying treaty it is just a trade agreement that the CCP will use to weaken Taiwan’s independence and economic stability.

It is significantly idiotic, substantially idiotic, obviously idiotic, expressly idiotic, astoundingly idiotic, noticeably idiotic, preposterously idiotic…

On the bright side, perhaps this is an opening for independence. Due to the substantial worldwide acceptance of this moniker, I suggest Taiwan (R.O.C.) designate itself the "Independent Republic of Chinese Taipei", and tell the PRC to blow it out their butts.

It’s one way for China to condition the international community into thinking that Taiwan is part of China. If "Taiwan" was used instead people will start realising that there is an independent country called Taiwan. The label is important in helping Taiwan gain more international recognition.

Most likely China will start trade sanctions on any country that supports a name change to "Taiwan". Most countries will fear this as it means they miss a large market as well as access to cheap labour and factories with low regulations.

Throwing temper tantrums will also happen, as it always does whenever an international event uses "Taiwan" (e.g. Antverpia 2010) or any other thing that slightly angers the Chinese government (e.g. screening of documentary "The 10 Conditions of Love").

The media in China will most likely condemn all countries that support the name "Taiwan", stating that the government and the people of those countries are all anti-Chinese, disturbing harmony in China and are never to be trusted. The media might also rally the Chinese to boycott buying products imported from those countries as well as visiting as tourists.

The authoritarian Chinese government likes to use its people as a tool, as part of trade sanction, cheap labour, brainwash them so people and government have a unified view so the current government can stay in power.

Chinese government will usually use these tactics/reactions to further pressure the international community not to recognise Taiwan as an independent country.

I do NOT think it is idiotic to refer Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei".

According to the Olympic Charter, only one Chinese Olympic Committee should be recognized. In consideration of the athletes in Taiwan having an opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games, the sports constitution in Taiwan could function as a local organization of China and still remain in the Olympic Movement in the name of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee. However, its anthem, flag and constitutions should be changed correspondingly.

In November 1979 in Nagoya, Japan the International Olympic Committee, and later all other international sports federations, adopted a resolution under which the National Olympic Committee of the ROC would be recognized as the National Olympic Committee of Chinese Taipei, and its athletes would compete under the name Chinese Taipei and a flag bearing the emblem of its Olympic Committee against a white background as the Chinese Taipei Olympic flag. The National Olympic Committee of the ROC boycotted the 1980 Olympics (both the winter and summer games) in protest of this resolution. It has competed under this flag and name exclusively at each Games since the 1984 Summer Olympics, as well as at the Paralympics and at other international events.

Taiwan is recognized as part of China by international sports organizations for good reason. Taiwan is a child temporarily separated from its motherland. Taiwan is already well on its way to reunification with China. Only foreign ESL teachers and American politicians fail to understand this looming reality.

Taiwan and China signed a reunifying trade agreement yesterday (June 29). The agreement removes tariffs on virtually all products sold between the two regions. The reunifying agreement effectively re-established Taiwan as a province of China for trade purposes. You can read all about it at the following link:
